what if i have an undecided identity?
This is an important question and we are happy to discuss your identity further. We believe labels are only as important as they are helpful. Sometimes labels bring comfort as they help give language to our experience. However, it’s completely valid to not fully be sure about your identity and in those cases curiosity, support and time are important. We’ve walked with many people in their process of discovering their identity so please reach out and let's start your journey. Please reach out to us with a free initial consultation to determine if The Christian Closet is right for you.
what does deconstructing faith mean?
We all have a system of beliefs whether we want to admit it or not. Even if it’s an understanding that is in reaction to a more conservatively-minded belief system. As Christians, many of us have been brought up in our family of origin to believe things like:
the bible is 100% true and perfect
we are born sinners
if you don’t accept Jesus into your heart you will go to hell no matter how good you are in your life
it is a choice to live the LGBTQ lifestyle; it is not pleasing to God
Christianity is the one true faith.
At some point these kinds of beliefs no longer fit into our life experiences and a sense of disappointment and hopelessness begins to replace what once felt like a secure faith. We are not here to prove or make sure that you believe or don’t believe the items in the list above. But we are here to walk with you when you experience a gap in what we used to believe and our life experience can be painful and disruptive. Our once securely held beliefs start to break down and a deconstruction of faith begins.
It’s almost like taking an old building, tearing it down and then there is an empty lot where a new and updated building can be rebuilt. Some people opt to reconstruct an updated faith and system of beliefs that better fits with their life experiences. We believe this is the best option for our spiritual paths; that we continue to allow God, life, and our collective experiences to continue to transform, teach, and change us.

my partner is not lgbtq, will you counsel them too?
